Updated: My three favorite macOS screensavers

Screensavers, you say? They’re more art than function these days. But, why not inject something either beautiful or useful into this mundane task of screen locking. Yes, it would be best if you still were locking your screen unless you want your four-year-old Slack messaging your co-workers. I have used a hot corner to the lower left to start my screen saver, locking the screen after a few seconds (if I accidentally trigger it). My screensaver will kick in after a healthy 10 minutes (I do work on multiple machines throughout the day). But, it’s a security practice you should never get out of the habit of doing. Lock your screen when you walk away. ...

Google says a site has no URLs with HTTPS but, according to testing tools like Qualys SSL Labs, HTTPS is fine

Insufficient HTTPS coverage on your site: What does that mean?

History In the early 2000s, I did a lot of side hustle work around Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I’d help clients with their search engine rankings. Back then, folks cared about all the search engines. Nowadays, there’s only one search engine people care enough to write about, Google. As Matthew Broberg so eloquently put on Twitter the other day, “Google is both the monopoly and trend setter. It’s a good target either way you look at it.” If you own a website and you care about it enough that you want people to look at it, do some SEO basics and add your site to the Google Search Console. ...

COVID-19 is more than just a pandemic

Reader question: What are your favorite cultural shifts from the last year (and more)

This article first appeared in DevOps’ish 210 and was 100% inspired by K Rain Leander The idea for the subject of this article came from K Rain Leander. Rain asks… “The past year has been one of lockdowns, increased security and decreased travel. DevOps became DevSecOps became DevSecOpsBiz. And the world embraced the work / life balance culture of DevOps. What are your favourite cultural shifts from the last year? What do you want to let go of forever? As we take a look at the latest updates in the DevOps world, also take a look at you and yours and let us know how you’re doing. And if we can help, let us know how.” ...

Named Key Opinion Leader, Kubernetes Influencer, and (accidentally) Red Hat CEO by Onalytica

Reasons I’m writing this Positive recognition is cool in my book (no matter the medium) Also, I was identified at first as CEO, Red Hat (community and work friends got a kick out of that) What Happened? Onalytica, an “Influencer Marketing Platform,” a parallel in tech would be an analyst firm, I guess. Mentioned me twice in their “Who’s Who in Hybrid Cloud?” report. This report bills itself as a “Hybrid Cloud report we have a look at a range of influencers and personas.” I guess that makes me an “influencer.” I’m okay with the label as it comes in the form of recognition for reading, research, and writing that I do (on top of a full time job). ...

Desk Setup, January 2021

There’s a metaphor out there that you should write about it if you say, are asked, or explain something more than three times. Since we’ve started OpenShift.tv, I cannot count how many times folks ask about my setup. I’ve wanted to write this article since last October. But, things hadn’t stabilized. For example, I’ve broken about half a dozen mic arms since May 2020 (of ALL price ranges). I also knew I would be moving operations from our unfinished basement up two stories to our guest bedroom (now my office). I wanted to make sure the setup was durable. I’ve proven it’s portable as I’ve helped produce remote meetings for my son Max’s school. But now is the time to write this up. Why? Because I need a reference! ...
