COVID-19 is more than just a pandemic

Reader question: What are your favorite cultural shifts from the last year (and more)

This article first appeared in DevOps’ish 210 and was 100% inspired by K Rain Leander The idea for the subject of this article came from K Rain Leander. Rain asks… “The past year has been one of lockdowns, increased security and decreased travel. DevOps became DevSecOps became DevSecOpsBiz. And the world embraced the work / life balance culture of DevOps. What are your favourite cultural shifts from the last year? What do you want to let go of forever? As we take a look at the latest updates in the DevOps world, also take a look at you and yours and let us know how you’re doing. And if we can help, let us know how.” ...

Named Key Opinion Leader, Kubernetes Influencer, and (accidentally) Red Hat CEO by Onalytica

Reasons I’m writing this Positive recognition is cool in my book (no matter the medium) Also, I was identified at first as CEO, Red Hat (community and work friends got a kick out of that) What Happened? Onalytica, an “Influencer Marketing Platform,” a parallel in tech would be an analyst firm, I guess. Mentioned me twice in their “Who’s Who in Hybrid Cloud?” report. This report bills itself as a “Hybrid Cloud report we have a look at a range of influencers and personas.” I guess that makes me an “influencer.” I’m okay with the label as it comes in the form of recognition for reading, research, and writing that I do (on top of a full time job). ...

Desk Setup, January 2021

There’s a metaphor out there that you should write about it if you say, are asked, or explain something more than three times. Since we’ve started OpenShift.tv, I cannot count how many times folks ask about my setup. I’ve wanted to write this article since last October. But, things hadn’t stabilized. For example, I’ve broken about half a dozen mic arms since May 2020 (of ALL price ranges). I also knew I would be moving operations from our unfinished basement up two stories to our guest bedroom (now my office). I wanted to make sure the setup was durable. I’ve proven it’s portable as I’ve helped produce remote meetings for my son Max’s school. But now is the time to write this up. Why? Because I need a reference! ...

2020 Learnings, 2021 Expectations

We’ve all had challenging years before. However, none were quite as challenging as in 2020. In the conclusion of last year’s post, I wrote, “I am hopeful that whatever economic upheaval we face as a society in 2020 is limited.” At that time, economic indicators were bubble-ish. However, a global pandemic was not something I had in the cards. No one did. A global pandemic, international protests against horrific injustices, and a US government damn near inept at helping with any of it. These events led to the largest voter turnout in this nation’s history. Hopefully, this will change our path and put the country back on track. ...

On the Passing of Dan Kohn

We’ve had a tragic loss in the cloud native community. Last weekend we lost Dan Kohn. Dan Kohn is the former Executive Director of Cloud Native Computing Foundation and was leading up COVID-19 response for the Linux Foundation. He passed away after losing his battle with stage four colon cancer. Dan’s passing happened far too soon. I knew Dan was battling something, but we hadn’t been in the same place for quite some time. It’s not one of those things you necessarily want to initiate a conversation about either. I did not know of Dan’s blog about it until he was gone. I would encourage all of us to look at our physical ailments as we age (perhaps more rapidly because of 2020) to take care of ourselves. ...
